A major crackdown on copper wire theft in downtown Los Angeles has resulted in the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of nearly four tons of copper, according to California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who made the announcement on Friday.
The California Department of Justice reported that authorities recovered around 3,000 feet of stolen telecommunications wire, valued at approximately $102,000. This operation was a joint effort with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD).
Bonta highlighted the critical nature of these thefts, stating, “Copper theft has a steep price, and we are ensuring that the criminals behind it are the ones who pay it, not our communities.” He vowed to hold accountable those who disrupt vital services in California.
These arrests come during a time of increasing concern regarding copper wire theft across the state, which has been linked to significant power and telecommunications outages, disruptions for businesses and agricultural sectors, and heightened public safety issues. The authorities reiterated the potential consequences of such thefts, which can impact emergency services and critical infrastructure.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna underscored that copper wire theft poses a substantial risk to public safety. He praised the collaborative efforts among law enforcement for the operation’s success and reaffirmed their dedication to safeguarding essential services.
Bonta also indicated that efforts continue alongside law enforcement and community partners to tackle this escalating issue and enhance protections for California’s infrastructure. Authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious activity related to copper wire theft to local law enforcement to help mitigate further problems.
As of now, the identities of the suspects and specific charges against them have not been disclosed.
