Connor McDavid’s Stellar Start Has Fans Buzzing in 2026-27 NHL Season

Oilers’ Connor McDavid is making it hard not to overreact to monster start in 2026-27

The NHL season of 2026-27 is in its infancy, with only five teams having completed 10 games in total. Notably, the Los Angeles Kings have played just six. Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers have participated in eight games so far this season. However, based on McDavid’s statistics, one might think more games have been played. He currently tops both the Oilers and the league with 23 points in these eight matches, while the nearest competitor, Jack Eichel from the Vegas Golden Knights, has 18 points but played two additional games.

McDavid’s exceptional performance raises eyebrows as he is on track for an unprecedented 242 points throughout the season, a figure far beyond the NHL single-season record. While such a total seems improbable, McDavid’s previous achievements lend weight to discussions of his potential this season. Additionally, noteworthy playoff feats in 2024, where he broke the record for most assists in a playoff run, add to his already impressive legacy. Historical comparisons with Wayne Gretzky underscore the challenge of maintaining such high levels of performance, particularly given the increased 84-game schedule this season. Given McDavid’s track record and current form, the speculation surrounding his capabilities this season is understandably high.
