Medical staffing shortage sends LAPD officers across town to book arrestees

The Los Angeles Police Department has announced that its jail at the 77th Street station in South LA is unable to process bookings for arrestees requiring medical checkups. As a result, individuals in custody who need medical attention will be transported to facilities in Downtown or Van Nuys, a process that could take officers hours.

Previously, the LAPD had medical staff available 24/7 at its main jail locations, including 77th, Van Nuys, and the Metropolitan Detention Center. However, officers were informed earlier this month that medical personnel would not be present at the 77th Station until January 4, 2027, due to a temporary staffing shortage. Capt. Silvia Sanchez indicated that about 70% of arrestees typically require medical treatment, often related to homelessness, mental health, or substance abuse issues. The department expressed that while the 77th station jail remains operational for those without medical needs, the current redirection of arrestees is a temporary measure.
