Yandy Díaz, Rays on the cusp of a World Series trip after ALCS Game 5 win over Guardians: 'It all ends tomorrow'

Yandy Díaz is acutely aware of how close the Tampa Bay Rays are to reaching the World Series. After Sunday’s 3-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians, he expressed confidence that the ALCS will not extend to a Game 7. “It’s a great opportunity,” Díaz said in Spanish on Sunday night, according to Mark Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. “All of us are thinking of it. But it all ends tomorrow. We’re going to win tomorrow.” With this win, the Rays now hold a 3-2 lead in the series and need just one more victory to secure a spot in the World Series.

During Game 5, the Rays built an early 3-0 lead, and Díaz contributed significantly, achieving three hits, including a double in the opening innings. The series shifts to Tropicana Field for Game 6 on Monday night, where the Rays will have the chance to clinch the series at home. While it remains uncertain who will start on the mound for the Guardians with manager Stephen Vogt noting that Gavin Williams is unavailable, the Guardians will need to find a way to force a decisive Game 7 if they hope to reach the World Series for the first time in a decade. Díaz, who was part of the Rays’ 2020 World Series team, holds a .293 batting average this season and is looking to return to the championship stage.
