The iconic Santa Monica Pier sign will begin its dismantling today for restoration, as officials announced a project aimed at replacing the aging bridge that connects Ocean Avenue to the pier. This blue neon sign, a staple since 1941, is scheduled to be taken down over several days and transported to a facility in Las Vegas for refurbishment.
Designated on the California Register of Historical Resources, the sign is anticipated to return to its spot at the pier’s entrance following the completion of the new bridge in 2028. Mayor Caroline Torosis emphasized the sign’s significance, stating that it is a recognizable landmark with a rich history. During the restoration period, a half-scale replica has been placed at the pier for visitors to enjoy.
