City controller subpoenas LA28 records amid transparency dispute over Olympic finances

Los Angeles City Controller Kenneth Mejia has initiated a subpoena for financial documents from LA28 after the organization allegedly did not fulfill requests made in August. The subpoena is geared towards acquiring bank statements, venue budgets, and information about contractors receiving payments from LA28, which is tasked with hosting the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Mejia emphasized the importance of these records, stating that if the Summer Olympics’ expenses exceed their budget, Los Angeles taxpayers might be financially responsible. He noted, “This is unacceptable. This is in the agreement. L.A. taxpayers are financially liable for unlimited amounts of money. We deserve to know how we’re doing financially leading up to the Olympics.” LA28 responded by stating they had not yet received the subpoena and expressed disappointment at the city diverting resources from preparations for the event.
