A video capturing the detention of a man by ICE agents in Long Beach has generated significant criticism from local and state leaders. Witnesses reported that they rushed outside upon hearing disturbances and found a man on the ground being restrained by agents.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon near the intersection of Locust Avenue and Ellis Street. Neighbors who viewed the cellphone footage expressed their distress, claiming that the encounter appeared violent, with accounts of the man being tased and kicked while handcuffed. The family of the detained individual confirmed he is a U.S. citizen, prompting further outrage.
In response to the incident, Long Beach police stated they were called in for assistance by the Department of Homeland Security and ICE related to vehicle vandalism and an individual requiring medical attention. Upon arrival, they found the man bleeding and subsequently took him to a hospital after removing his handcuffs.
Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson shared his concerns on social media, emphasizing that residents should not have to endure such situations in their neighborhoods and calling for clarification on the events. Congressman Robert Garcia condemned the actions of ICE agents, labeling the encounter as brutal and stating that Long Beach supports its immigrant communities. In contrast, U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli criticized Garcia for allegedly inciting obstruction against federal agents enforcing immigration laws. Efforts to obtain comments from ICE, DHS, and CBP remain unanswered.
