Mavericks Pass on Derrick Lively II Extension as Injury Concerns Complicate His Future

The Dallas Mavericks have opted not to offer Derrick Lively II a rookie contract extension, as no agreement was reached before the deadline. Lively will now enter the final year of his rookie contract, which is valued at approximately $7.24 million.

The decision stemmed from Lively’s ongoing health issues; he has not yet been medically cleared to return after undergoing right foot surgery and missing the entire preseason. His previous seasons were also marred by injuries, as he appeared in only 36 games in 2024-25 and just 7 games the following year. The Mavericks require players who can consistently remain healthy, particularly in light of their struggles with injuries in the past season.

Despite these concerns, Lively remains a crucial asset to the team, demonstrating potential on both ends of the floor. He averaged 8.8 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks during his most successful rookie season and was instrumental in the Mavericks’ finals appearance in 2024.

Going forward, the Mavericks can extend Lively a qualifying offer after this season, potentially making him a restricted free agent. The franchise appears to be taking a wait-and-see approach, keen on assessing his performance and health in the coming months to determine his contract future.
